Is your child stressed, and do you know why?

December is a time filled with report cards and progress checks, teacher meetings and more. Holiday time is the perfect time to find out why your child has been struggling in school. The stress of the back to school season may be over, but your child’s challenges may not. There are some easy action steps you can take.

Can you relate to the following:

Is your child struggling to remember what they’ve studied? This is frustrating for everyone involved when you cannot figure out what is causing the issue. Is it emotional? Is it effort? Is it something else? Last week I met with parents to discuss their son’s testing/assessment results. His weak visual memory is leaving him frustrated and unprepared for tests. It doesn’t matter how much he studies, his ability to remember it doesn’t function, leaving him feeling stranded and stressed during a test. The good news is that this can be developed, he will then begin to learn effectively for the rest of his/her life.

Is your child struggling with learning to read? Do they miss small words, or sound like they are reading each individual word separately instead of flowing them together? There are many skills that form the foundation of reading. When there are any gaps in their development, progress will be significantly impaired. Breakthroughs assesses and develops 13 individual skills that are crucial for reading success. Reading builds knowledge and experience with the underlying language core which is then carried over into other language forms. A child that struggles to read at age 8 may develop a writing disorder by age 14 (Lyytinen & Ekland, 2005).

When there are learning issues, many times they can impact behaviour.

Is your child’s behaviour an issue at school or at home? Behaviour is a language and our job at Breakthroughs is to ascertain what the student is trying to telling us. Many children who are struggling to learn will develop behaviours. Children will either act out, or withdraw. Acting out is actually the better choice, because the child’s needs are more likely to be noticed.

These are a few warning signs that some of the foundational learning skills are under developed. For more information, check out our complete list of warning signs.

At Breakthroughs in Learning we address these issues and more so your child will thrive in their school years and beyond. Imagine your child meeting or exceeding learning guidelines, and your job as a parent is just a little easier. Don’t wait until the school year is over. School can feel like a daily battle. As parents, you know that something needs to change if they’re going to have an opportunity to be successful at university or college. Book a free consult with one of our learning disabilities experts to learn how your child can thrive rather than just survive!
