However, a learning disability does not have to be a death sentence to a productive life. As knowledge of learning disabilities expands so do options for treatment and therapy to dramatically improve performance.
Defining learning disabilities has expanded beyond attention disorders, such as ADD and ADHD, and now includes very specific learning shortcomings. Dyscalculia (mathematical disability), Dysgraphia (writing disability), and Dyspraxia (motor skills issues) all help narrow down a child’s specific difficulty which helps design an effective educational therapy program. Dyslexia, ADHD, and Gerstmann’s Syndrome still arise too.
Most encouraging is that learning disabilities can be detected as early as preschool. Early intervention means children learn to overcome their disability sooner and prevent many of the negative impacts to their future education including low grades, frustration, and low esteem.
Education regarding learning disabilities also helps parents help their children. The more learned, the easier it is to offer support.
